In the main campaign, the player takes on the role of a member of an elite military unit called Ghosts. As befits a special task force, "ghosts" perform the most dangerous missions, often also deep in enemy territory.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is an attempt to combine gameplay elements well known to fans of the series with completely new solutions. The creators remained faithful to, inter alia, the main campaign full of spectacular action scenes. One of the most interesting innovations is the presence of a trained dog in the unit, which turns out to be not only an excellent killing weapon, but can also distract enemies, cause a panic effect or imperceptibly recognize the area (thanks to the camera carried). During the work on the game, a lot of attention was paid to multiplayer fun. In multiplayer mode, players can largely personalize the appearance of their heroes, choosing not only elements of armament, but also military clothing (gloves, belts, vests, etc.).

Also noteworthy are completely new types of maps with an environment sensitive to destruction and dynamic events generated as a result of the actions of players and the changing appearance of the locations. The game also features new online game modes (Cranked, Search & Rescue, Squad, Extinction), a changed perk system affecting battlefield achievements and support packages, already known from Modern Warfare 3.
